Accessibility Statement

General Statement

We have made every effort to make this site accessible and easy to use for everyone. We support as many desktop and tablet browsers as possible. We do not support versions of Internet Explorer earlier than version 7.

The main feature of this web site is a navigable map that displays various types of information about the road network. Map applications have a unique set of accessibility challenges, each of which we hope to have addressed. If you experience any accessibility issues when using the map, or any of the other facilities on this web site, please see the "How can I leave some feedback" section of the FAQs page and let us know.

Accessibility is a key part of all Traffic England facilities. Accessibility features will form part of any new developments or improvements to this service.

There is an app available that has been designed for mobile users. Please visit the Highways England Mobile Services page for more information. We don't currently support mobile browsers directly on this site.

Text Alternatives

Text alternatives are present for images where appropriate. As Traffic England is primarily a map based application, providing text alternatives to some functionality would not be practical. The Report and Alerts pages can be used to get a textual report of travel conditions.

Audio & Video

Traffic England does not deliver any audio or video content.

Text Zoom

Some web browsers have a facility to increase or decrease the size of the text on a web page, this is sometimes called 'Text Zoom'. This facility is fully supported by Traffic England. On desktop devices this can usually be found in the 'View' menu if the web browser supports it.

Map Zooming & Panning

The Map page can be zoomed in and out using a pinch gesture on touch devices, the mouse wheel or multi-touch surface on desktop devices, the keyboard + (plus) and - (minus) keys on desktop devices or by using the zoom level control on the top right of the map display.

The Map page can be panned up, down, left and right using a swipe gesture on touch devices, dragging using the mouse or multi-touch surface on desktop devices, the keyboard arrow keys on desktop devices or by using the direction control on the top right of the map display.

Colours & Contrast

The Map uses standard map colors. Events, CCTV cameras and roadside signs are marked with appropriate icons. The text description of an event is available by clicking or tapping on the event icon on the map.

Live traffic data is displayed on the map using a set of road colours to indicate the type of live traffic data that is enabled. The key for these colours is displayed at the bottom left of the map. The colours used are designed to be distinguishable.

CCTV Camera Images

Clicking or tapping on a CCTV icon on the Map will open a recent still image from that camera. This service is provided by HANET, as such it is not covered in this accessibility statement.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are available on the Map page. If available, the arrow keys will navigate around the map, and the + (plus) and - (minus) keys will zoom the map in and out.

Tablet Limitations

For Pro and Subscriber users on tablet devices the ability to create new areas is unavailable. However, areas that have been created on desktop browsers are availble to view and use in reports.
